Volunteer for the Kansas Half Marathon!
Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the Kansas Half Marathon and 5k! A race of this size couldn’t happen without the efforts of countless volunteers. We have need for volunteers along the course, at the aid stations, and in the finish area. All volunteers will get a free T-shirt and a great morning cheering on runners as they make their way through Lawrence!
Volunteer Duties:
COURSE MARSHALS:
Course marshals are volunteers placed along the route at intersections. They help direct traffic, waving cars through when there’s breaks in the runners passing by, direct runners which way to go, and cheer runners on. Course marshals would need to be in position no later than 20 minutes prior to the first runners. Depending on where along the course the marshal is, this job involves 1-2 hours on course, plus time prior to the race to pick up materials and instructions.
AID STATIONS:
Aid stations are spaced along the course and are places for runners to get water and sports drink. These volunteers hand out water, and sports drinks to runners as they run by-there’s also a fair bit of setup in pouring out water and sports drink into cups before the runners get there and cleaning up discarded cups. Aid stations require 10-15 volunteers each, and are great opportunities for groups looking to volunteer-though individuals are always welcome too! This job involves 1-2.5 hours on course (depending on location), and can be done in shifts. Groups looking to volunteer here should designate an “Aid Station Captain” to be the contact point.
START/FINISH AREA:
There are numerous jobs around the start/finish, including helping with setup and breakdown, handing out medals, and prepping food/drink for finishers. Time commitments vary depend on the specific task.
